Why SEO Should Be Considered Before Your Website Is Even Built

Why SEO Should Be Considered Before Your Website Is Even Built

A website can look fantastic, but if no one can find it, it’s not going to do much for your business.

When I talk with new clients, one of the first things we discuss isn’t colours, fonts, or layout. It is how people might actually find their website in the first place.

Because there’s not much point having a beautiful website if it never appears in search results.

Thinking about SEO (search engine optimisation) early can make a huge difference to how easily potential customers can discover your business online.

Start by Thinking About What People Might Search For

Something I often say to new clients is:

Put yourself in the shoes of someone looking for your services. What might they be searching for?

Your website should help those people quickly find what they need.

For example, if someone is looking for a landscaper, they might search something like:

  • landscaper Wellington

  • garden design Wellington

  • garden maintenance services

Your website needs to clearly show both visitors and search engines what your business does.

This usually starts with simple things like clear headings, well structured pages, and language that reflects the services you offer.

Website Structure Plays a Big Role in SEO

A website that is structured clearly is easier for both visitors and search engines to understand.

This means having logical pages such as:

  • Home

  • Services

  • About

  • Contact

Sometimes businesses try to fit everything onto one long page, but separating services into their own pages can help search engines better understand what your business offers.

Clear page titles and headings also make a big difference. They help Google understand the content of your site and match it with relevant searches.

Why Some Websites Struggle to Rank

Over the years I have seen many websites that look great visually but struggle to appear in search results.

Often the issue is not the design. The problem is that search visibility simply was not considered when the site was built.

Some common problems include:

  • vague page headings

  • unclear service descriptions

  • confusing navigation

  • not enough content explaining what the business does

When a website is built with SEO in mind from the beginning, these things are much easier to get right.

My Approach to SEO Comes From Running an Online Business

My background running an ecommerce business that has ranked strongly in Google searches for more than a decade has heavily influenced the way I approach website design.

Through our family business, ScopeUOut, we have worked hard to keep our website ranking at the top of relevant search results in a competitive niche.

That experience taught me how important it is to think about search visibility early rather than trying to add it later.

When I design websites now, I am always thinking about how people might discover that business online and how the website structure can support that.

Building Websites for Businesses in Wellington and Across New Zealand

I work with small businesses across Wellington and around New Zealand to design websites that are clear, practical, and easy to manage.

Every project is a little different, but the goal is always the same. Build a website that explains what the business does clearly and helps the right people find it online.

If you are looking for a website designer in Wellington, or you are planning a new website for your business, thinking about structure, messaging, and SEO from the beginning can make a huge difference to how well the site performs over time.

Building Websites That Can Actually Be Found

A well designed website should do more than just look good.

It should clearly explain what you do, help visitors quickly understand your services, and make it easy for potential clients to get in touch.

Just as importantly, it should be structured in a way that allows the right people to find it.

Because at the end of the day, there is not much point having a website if it cannot be discovered.
