The team behind The Great New Zealand Handwriting Challenge reached out with a technical issue — their email setup wasn’t working properly, and they couldn’t contact their list of subscribers ahead of the upcoming challenge.

They were already a client of mine from another project, so they got in touch knowing I could help. But when I looked at the site, it was clear there were bigger issues. The structure was confusing, the design was overwhelming, and the overall experience wasn’t doing justice to the amazing work they do.

The site had been built in-house, with all the best intentions — but it needed a bit of outside perspective (and restraint!) to help bring clarity and polish.

As a parent of a six-year-old myself, I genuinely believe in the value of this initiative — so I offered to go beyond the small scope of work they’d paid for. What started as a simple fix turned into a generously discounted site refresh to support the cause.

The result is a much cleaner, more user-friendly website that still reflects the organisation’s energy and passion, but in a way that’s far easier for teachers to navigate.
