How Long Does It Take to Build a Website

One of the most common questions I hear from new clients is how long it takes to build a website.

The honest answer is that it depends on the size of the website, how prepared the business is with content, and how complex the project is.

For most small business websites, a typical timeline is around four to six weeks from start to launch.

However, several factors can influence how quickly a project moves forward.

The Size of the Website

One of the biggest factors affecting the timeline is the size of the website.

A simple one-page website can often be completed quite quickly, while a larger site with multiple pages, service sections, or portfolio content naturally takes longer to plan and build.

Most small business websites include a handful of core pages such as a homepage, services page, about page, and contact page.

Preparing Content

Content is often the biggest factor affecting how long a website project takes.

Text, images, and information about your services all need to be gathered before the site can be built properly.

If everything is ready from the start, the process usually moves much more quickly. If content still needs to be written or organised, the timeline can extend a little.

Some clients prefer to provide all of their content themselves, while others ask me to help pull information together. That might involve reviewing an existing website, organising large amounts of material, reformatting content, or refining the wording so it works well on the new site and performs well in search results.

Design and Layout

For example, I usually start by building the homepage first. This gives the client a chance to review the overall layout, style, and direction of the site before the rest of the pages are completed.

Once the homepage is approved, the rest of the website is built and the client then reviews the full site, including the wording, images, and overall flow.

Projects tend to move forward most smoothly when feedback is provided within a few days. When reviews take longer, the timeline can naturally stretch out.

This is very normal. Small business owners are often juggling many responsibilities, so website projects often need to fit around other priorities.

For many full sized small business websites, the total work involved is often around forty hours, although that time is usually spread across several weeks while other projects are also in progress.

Some projects move faster, especially when the content is ready to go. Others take a little longer if more planning or revisions are involved.

If a client has a specific deadline, it is often possible to complete a project more quickly. In those cases we simply prioritise the work and keep communication flowing so everything can move forward efficiently.

The goal is always to build a website that clearly represents the business and works well for its visitors.
