Why Your Website Isn’t Showing Up on Google
It can be frustrating to build a website and then discover that it does not seem to appear anywhere in Google search results.
Many small business owners assume something must be broken, but in most cases there is a simple explanation. Search engines take time to discover, understand, and rank new websites.
There are several common reasons why a website might not be showing up in Google.
Your Website Is New
One of the most common reasons a website does not appear in search results is simply that it is new.
Google needs time to discover and index new websites before they begin appearing in search results. In many cases this process can take a few days or even a few weeks.
Submitting a website through Google Search Console can help speed up this process by letting Google know the site exists and encouraging it to be indexed more quickly.
When I build websites for clients, this is something I set up as part of the standard process so that new sites are submitted to Google as soon as they go live.
Your Website Has Very Little Content
Search engines rely on content to understand what a website is about.
If a website only contains a small amount of text, it can be difficult for Google to determine when it should appear in search results.
Adding clear information about your services, your location, and the type of work you do helps search engines understand your website and who it is relevant for.
One mistake I often see is important information being placed inside images rather than written as text on the page. While this might look good visually, search engines cannot read text that is embedded inside images. This means valuable information about your services may not actually be helping your website rank.
For this reason, it is always best to include key information as normal text on the page, even if the design also includes images or graphics. The two can easily work together, with text layered over images or positioned alongside them.

Your Website Is Not Targeting the Right Keywords
When people search on Google, they usually type in specific phrases such as:

accountant for small business
If those phrases are not clearly mentioned within the content of your website, Google may struggle to connect your site with those searches.
Thinking about what your potential clients might actually type into Google is an important part of planning your website content.
Your Website Has Not Built Authority Yet
Search engines also look at signals that indicate whether a website is trustworthy and established.
These can include things like:
other websites linking to your site
consistent content updates
how long your website has existed
Newer websites often take a little time to build this authority.
Your Website Is Not Set Up With SEO In Mind
Sometimes websites are built without considering how search engines read and understand the site.
Things like page structure, headings, page titles, and internal links all help Google interpret the content of a website.
This is one reason why SEO is often best considered before a website is built, rather than trying to add it later.

Good SEO foundations make it much easier for a website to be discovered in search results over time.
